EMPOWERED BY FAITH 2013 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
The wind was blowing strong on March 8-9, 2013! Literally, the famous El Paso winds were
whipping up the dust all over town...we call it trading real estate. But even more powerful
was the wind of the Holy Spirit moving among the 200 some participants in the Catholic
Charismatic Conference "Empowered by Faith".
The Conference was held at Las Alas, the home of
Our Lady's Youth Center ministry at 501 E. Paisano,
site of the charismatic prayer community begun in
1970 by Fr. Richard Thomas, S.J., who went home to
the Lord in 2006. The community is well known for
their ministry to the poor in Juarez, Mexico, which lies
just a mile or two across the Rio Grande from the
Center. OLYC leadership has been kind enough to
welcome our Conference to their hall for several years
now. The atmosphere at Las Alas is very much like that at Centro Santa Fe, our Open Arms
ministry center: the presence of the Lord and His Holy Spirit are palpable.
God blessed us mightily with the preaching of Father Enrique Lopez of Deming, NM, and Jim
Murphy, lay evangelist from Michigan. Two totally different but equally powerful personalities
with the same message: Be not afraid! Know who you are in the Lord and stand up for your
faith!
Father Enrique spoke on "Empowered by the Word of God" and "Empowered by the
Sacraments". Everyone was blown away by the depth of his knowledge and spirituality.
He urged us to be truly Catholic as well as faithfully charismatic, coming against the watered-
down Gospel and lukewarm Catholic culture so common today. Jim Murphy
shared his testimony and spoke powerfully about living our faith, living "baptized in the Holy
Spirit" and by believing God can use us even in our weakness. Jim is a storyteller with a
dramatic flair and great humor as he teaches basic Catholic truths.
